Which is stunning fare, in the context of the other ballads that got to #1 in the first few years of the 90's, but in the context of the rest of Madonna's career? Eh.īerserkboi (10) - Gorgeous, sumptuous ballad, haters clearly don’t have feelings. well, another good if not really exceptional ballad, with a great vocal performance and great orchestration that help to distinguish it a bit. And at all the other times, “This Used to Be My Playground” comes out as nothing more than. But the “right time”, unfortunately, isn't that often. And with a well-written set of lyrics for her to wrap her voice around, it really can get me in the heart if it catches me at the right time. I like that she gets to use her lower range extensively too, as I feel that's always been one of her greatest assets as a singer. Her singing here is quite impressive, subdued yet strong and quietly powerful, and the less polished quality of her voice only adds to the expressiveness of it it quavers as she digs into the aching nostalgia of the lyrics, giving it a very nicely melancholic feel. And it isn't even a close contest either. I know some people have been critical of Madonna's vocals pre- Evita and pre-vocal lessons, but you know what? I prefer her earlier vocal style. What really helps the song out, though, is Madonna's vocal performance. The production might not be all that at times, but the melody is very pretty, as plush and romantic yet wistful as it needed to be, with some surprisingly interesting chord changes at times, and a strikingly abrupt ending that adds a little more character to its narrative. The string section sounds lush, and it's actually seriously beautiful, but that's about all I can pick out as really special in the production – the rest is only a matter of “not bad, gets the job done”.īut that's all it really needed to do. As for the rest of the production? Well, I'm not wild about the keyboard intro, but thankfully it doesn't last long, and the piano and organ that the rest of the song is built on are nice. Even now, it sort of feels like everything just runs together and isn't really that distinguished sometimes. Now that's something I actually like about the song, as it gives it this sleek, ethereal flowing vibe, but it took me a while to get used to it. It's especially emphasized with the way that the verse and the chorus seamlessly run into one another. Five minutes? Yeah, that's too rich for my blood (said the Jim Steinman fan), considering how slow the song is and how basic the drumbeat is. The song goes on a little bit too long, for one thing.

Your mileage may vary on this, but to my ears, “This Used to Be My Playground” has the air of an artist who is reaching for a new sound, but doesn't quite have it down pat yet – it would take the next few Madonna ballads to lock it in (and get higher than the 7.25 I gave this one). It's a pretty solid Madonna ballad, nothing less, but unfortunately, also nothing more. So it's too bad “Playground” doesn't quite hit the heights that I would have wanted it to. Which is fine by me, I like Madonna's worthy ballads very much: “Rain” and “Bad Girl” have always been my favourite songs on Erotica, and I consider Bedtime Stories to be her most underrated record. (They even share producer Shep Pettibone!) To me, it seems to have more in common with the material that she would release after the Erotica era, that being the phase of her career where she opted to tone down the sexually-charged image and release a lengthy string of self-consciously worthy ballads as singles.

(And not just because it comes from the soundtrack to the only movie in Madonna's filmography that's worth half a damn.) After all, the notorious “Justify My Love” was only a year old, and the very next single she released after “Playground”, a mere three months later, was “Erotica” - in terms of Madonna's artistic personality, you don't get much further apart than the, um, frankness of that song and the reflective tenderness of this one. If you think about it, the place of “This Used to Be My Playground” in Madonna's discography is a little odd. Highest score: 7 x 10 (, ,, ,, Mayonnaise, Generic )
